A historic stride in construction technology was taken as India introduced its inaugural post office building, meticulously crafted using state-of-the-art 3D printing technology. The event was graced by Communications and Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, who inaugurated the innovative structure situated in Bengaluru’s Cambridge Layout.

The remarkable speed of this construction venture is noteworthy; a mere 43 days sufficed to erect the building. Impressively, the cost incurred for this architectural marvel was Rs 26 lakh, reflecting a significant 40% reduction compared to traditional construction methods.

Encompassing an expansive area of 1021 square feet, this achievement was realized with the expert guidance of IIT Madras, in collaboration with Larsen & Tourbo Limited. Minister Vaishnaw, virtually launching the structure from the General Post Office, extolled India’s technological prowess, citing achievements such as 4G, 5G, and the commendable Vande Bharat Express, a prime example of indigenous talent shining on a global stage. Interestingly, the Vande Bharat Express attains a speed of 100 kmph within a mere 52 seconds, surpassing the renowned Shinkansen’s performance.

Chief Postmaster General, S Rajendra Kumar, praised this revolutionary leap for its cost-effectiveness and environmental consciousness. He expounded on the 3D construction process, delineating its dual facets. One involves assembling printed building components, while the other, exemplified by this post office, encompasses on-site construction based on meticulous input design.

From a technological standpoint, George Abraham, Operations Head of L & T for South and East, emphasized the digital workflow’s prowess in eradicating human fallibility. He underscored that the fully automated process not only guarantees impeccable product quality but also underscores its sustainability, a hallmark of contemporary construction methodologies. The diminished construction expense – a mere 40% of conventional methods – adds an appealing economic facet to this accomplishment.

A robotic printer intricately deposits layers of concrete as per approved designs, employing specialized concrete that solidifies rapidly, ensuring seamless bonding between layers for structural integrity. Minister Vaishnaw’s visit to the post office was marred by protests from supporters of local MLA N A Haris, who felt slighted due to not receiving formal invitations or having their representative’s name featured on the invitation.
