President Droupadi Murmu Launches INS Vindhyagiri: Navy’s Latest Stealth Frigate!

President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated a significant event on Thursday, launching the INS Vindhyagiri, an advanced stealth frigate, at the premises of Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) on the picturesque banks of the River Hooghly in Kolkata.

In attendance at the grand launch were prominent figures including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Governor SCV Ananda Bose, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, and other distinguished guests who witnessed this historic moment.

The INS Vindhyagiri, the sixth stealth frigate constructed under Project 17A at GRSE, boasts remarkable technological and design advancements.

Subsequent to its launch, the INS Vindhyagiri will join its two sister ships at GRSE’s outfitting jetty. This crucial step signifies the progression of remaining activities and equipment trials essential prior to the vessels’ official commissioning and delivery.

A remarkable leap from the Project 17 (Shivalik Class) Frigates, the Project 17A Frigates showcase elevated stealth capabilities, cutting-edge weaponry and sensors, and state-of-the-art platform management systems.

Presently, seven Project 17A Frigates are at various stages of construction at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and GRSE.

Officials from the Defence Ministry emphasized the importance of this launch, underscoring that it will bolster India’s defense industrial base, curtail dependence on foreign suppliers, nurture self-sufficiency, and foster a robust defense industrial foundation.

This event marks the culmination of Kolkata’s shipbuilding prowess in constructing the third and final stealth frigate for the Navy under Project 17A. Adorned with the latest technological marvels, the ship will undergo comprehensive trials before its commissioning into active service within the Indian Navy.

Remarkably, over 75% of Project 17A orders have been channeled towards indigenous firms, including Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and ancillary industries within India. This strategy seamlessly aligns with the principles of ‘AatmaNirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) championed by the Narendra Modi-led central government.

During the ceremony, President Droupadi Murmu eloquently emphasized the significance of the INS Vindhyagiri’s name, expressing hope that it draws strength from the mountains it symbolizes. As it sets sail on the mighty Hooghly, she envisioned it navigating with unwavering determination while upholding cherished values.
